AFD1000 Series / Active Force Tools
The Series 1000 Active Force Devices utilize an advanced closed-loop force control technology. Using this patented technology,
the 1000 Series active force control scheme enables incredibly accurate performance.
This superior performance provides immediate
benefits through greatly increased production rates with consistent, high-quality results.
The 1000 Series comes in three configurations:
AFD1000-1 Vertical; AFD1000-2 Horizontal; and the AFD1000-3 Table Top. The units are functionally identical, but differ in orientation
with which they attach to the robot wrist or mount to a table. This allows you to optimize robot reach and dexterity for your
particular application.
Here are just a few operations the 1000 Series, coupled with the proper process equipment, can accomplish
faster, more accurately, and with greater control than ever before:
- Grinding (molds, weld beads)
- Deburring (parting lines, chamfer)
- Polishing (glass, wood, sheet metal)
- Drilling / Chamfering (thru-hole, to-depth)
- Weld Shaving (see SWS100-1.2)
- Any other process which
requires an
accurate, compliant, continuously
adjustable applied force.
Features:
- Constant force regardless of orientation
- Automatic
acceleration compensation
- Automatic payload weight measurement
- Quick-change capability
- Force can be varied based on slide position
- Fast mechanical response
- All fittings, fasteners and threaded holes are METRIC

U.S. Patent No 5,448,146
In contrast to passive techniques, the 1000 Series tools use an active closed-loop control scheme where, the AFD works in concert
with a remote FCU1000 Active Compliance Controller. This controller executes proprietary algorithms and continuously monitors
the force applied to the work surface via a precision load cell. By immediately correcting any detected force variation, this
advance technology allows the 1000 Series to apply forces accurate to within ± 0.1 lbs. (± 0.4 N) over their entire operational
force range.
Active control also provides several other useful features not available in the less sophisticated passive open-loop
systmes. The 1000 Series have the build-in ability to precisely weigh the process equipment and compensate for gravity induced
forces in any orientation. This means that if you want to apply 8.2 lbs (36.5 N) of force to a surface, then the 1000 Series
will apply 8.2 lbs. (36 N) in any orientation -horizontal, vertical, even upside-down, regardless of the process equipment weight
and without any additional integration effort from you. In addition, force variations due to acceleration effects are automatically
corrected allowing you to use much higher speeds over contoured surfaces and around corners.
Integrating the 1000 Series into
your system count not be any easier. The AFD is completely self-contained and does not require any additional equipment to be
attached to the robotic manipulator. The installation setup consists of one small flexible air supply line and a supplied controller
cable connected to the AFD. This simple setup means that you can be up and running your process in a matter of minutes.
All
these features combine to make the 1000 Series the most advanced, dependable and cost effective force control system available today.
